Kit-100
In 1989 and 1990 Bob Turner was the artist in residence at Simon Fraser University's school of electrical engineering. Jeff Koftinoff was in charge of micro electronics on this project. This is not how they met but this was the fire that forged our partnership.
The project was about making innovative input devices for high quads on ventilators and working with/creating 2 rock and roll bands.
As part of this project they went to MIT where we saw a film of a
violin player and a "pad " player playing improvised new music compositions. The pad player was an approximately 2 foot square surface that was a medi controller with an xyz axis. It was played with Tympani mallets. Their demure was "very serious" and stoic.
Jeff was working on the same thing but his was about 5 inches square with an xyz axis. Bob had to turn in a composition with respect to this project and he decided this was too good to be true. So they emulated the MIT video except Jeff played his pad with q tips and I played a very large violin. So it was similar but backwards. They also tried to look even more serious, and stoic than the MIT musicians and took that "over the top". We thought that was funny but in that environment maybe not.
It was recorded on a single 1990 SVHS camera and solorized.
The program has been designed as universal software for security hybrid platforms working simultaneously with wireless and wired IP cameras, TV-boards, capture cards, power-line, and USB cameras. It has web interface with the same look and functionality on the local and remote computers. Users watch MPEG-4 coded video and have full control of the program through network that surveillance computer can be operated with no monitor, keyboard, and mouse connected. Program's modular structure significantly increases reliability because all modules act as independent applications. If one module fails, other modules continue running. For example if the "capture" module freezes, "watchdog" restarts it immediately that viewers don't notice anything because they are watching video using a "playback" module. The program performs "cyclic" recording that the "disk full" situation never occurs. The recording can be non-stop or it can be activated by motion, audio activity, sensor, or by schedule. Has pre-alarm and post-alarm recording. Playing back recorded video is pretty simple and performs on the surveillance computer as well as on remote computer through Web interface. The program performs synchronized video playback for event analysis from multiple cameras simultaneously. Also recorded data can be searched by date, time or by sensor event. All recorded data can be encrypted and password protected.

Such concerns and mounting complaints are resulting in legislative changes while simultaneously there are free speech voices which deplore the intervention of a regulatory authority policing the Internet.
The Library Filter is a filter that empowers responsible people to influence, choose, and control what their dependents can be exposed to on the Internet.
The Library Filter is a comprehensive Internet scanner with the ability to block, log, and forward e-mail to third parties if access violations occur. It is easily configurable and adaptable to filter by any desired criteria's. It has a a silent installation without any indication it is installed.
The secular daycare service provided by the university offered childcare to a wide range of people who chose it because it was convenient. I often think of an Iraqi child that I cared for, for about 18 months while his father was completing a doctorate in nuclear physics. I wonder if he is still alive.
